Inulin is a soluble dietary fiber that is not hydrolized by digestive enzymes. It is a prebiotic, selectively promoting growth and activity of beneficial bacteria of the digestive system while repressing harmful ones. While similar to FOS, Inulin contains longer chain molecules more capable of reaching the colon, energizing the beneficial bacteria in an otherwise energy defecient ecosystem. Inulin has typical fiber effects on gut function, such as lowering intestinal pH and relieving constipation and has been shown to have a modulating effect on lipid metabolism. Inulin has a very low glycemic index so it is suitable for those on restricted diets.
This product is 90% Inulin derived from Jerusalem Artichoke with a DP (degree of polymerization) value in the range between 2 and 60. (FOS is essentially Inulin with a DP below 10.) It has a beige color, is slightly sweet with a slight artichoke-like taste and can be easily added to food. Typical use is 2 grams with meals. *747.0 (227 grams), 8oz. powder, 112 doses, $6.90. This item replaces FOS code 747.5
