Deployment Booklet
Deployment can be a difficult time, for both the adults being deployed and the families they are leaving behind. Children face a host of special issues when one or both of their parents are deployed. This booklet was created to help parents and educators, two groups who care deeply about children, support children during this potentially stressful time. It includes ways that parents and educators can work together to ensure that the education process stays on track during a deployment.

The deployment cycle is best thought of as three separate phases: (1) predeployment, (2) deployment, and (3) reunion. Each phase has unique issues and requires different strategies. The information provided in the booklet is grouped into three sections to parallel this structure. Special suggestions for parents and educators are provided to help both groups anticipate the specific needs of children in that phase of the cycle and to provide necessary support.

Getting Your Ducklings in a Row ©
Getting Your Ducklings in a Row © is a booklet created to give parents basic information regarding age and vaccination requirements of school systems serving the majority of military children. Most military families already know that school entry requirements vary from state to state. It is also important to note that individual districts can (and do) impose additional requirements so variations can also be seen in the same state. Our best advice is to contact your new school district to make sure you have the most accurate information about their requirements and to be careful about the details. All 50 states, plus DoDEA, are represented in this publication. States were selected based on the number of military children located in each state.

Guard & Reserve Booklet
How communities can support the children and families of those serving in the National Guard or Reserves©
This booklet has two main goals. The first is to provide general information about both the National Guard and the Reserves, two of the three components of the United States military. The second and more important goal is to introduce concerned citizens and educators to issues facing children and families of those serving in these critical segments of the military and to assist communities in creating dynamic networks of support for these families.
The booklet is meant to give you a foundation foe enacting considerate and thoughtful efforts in your own community that will augment the support provided by the military for its members. A few ideas are provided to get you started but the possibilities are endless.

Working with Military Children – A Primer for School Personnel
The project to produce the Primer was undertaken in an effort to recognize and record the extremely crucial role schools played in support the children of military service members during the Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. Targeted to all school personnel and guidance counselors in particular, this primer is designed to educate, support, and affirm their future efforts.

The format emphasizes strengths, stressors, and strategies as we look at four major aspects of the military lifestyle: separations or deployments, homecomings, relocation and crises. An activities section is also included. It lists activities that teachers and counselors can use with individuals, or small or large groups of elementary school age children. These activities were designed to help children cope with adjustments that a military lifestyle can demand.

The Military Parent’s Guide to No Child Left Behind©
The No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) was signed into law by President Bush on January 8, 2002. This landmark legislation seeks to raise the academic performance of all children, subgroup by subgroup, with the ultimate goal of 100% proficiency by 2013-2014. With NCLB the federal government hopes to change public education by incorporating a strong system of accountability for results. States are required to develop clear standards, align their schools' curriculum to those standards, and test students to make sure they are achieving at the appropriate level. Test data is to be disaggregated by minority and economically disadvantaged subgroups so that students who need extra help can be identified and given the attention they need. The law also requires that education strategies be based on scientifically proven methods and that all students are taught by highly qualified teachers.

This booklet looks at No Child Left Behind from the perspective of the military child. It offers an overview of the major provisions of the legislation and alerts parents to some of the potential problems NCLB may cause for military students. The MCEC Tips empower parents to maximize military students' benefits under the law and serves as a guide to the information parents need to make the best decisions for their individual child. The booklet also provides a list of resources and links to useful websites for those who want more information about NCLB and the issues surrounding it.
