Scholars have typically interpreted a Dead Sea Scroll document called 4QMMT as contrary to the teachings of Paul. It seems to advocate justification by acts whereas Paul teaches justification by faith alone. Wright demonstrates that while the arguments in 4QMMT seem to contradict Paul, that is not necessarily the case.

N.T. Wright, formerly a lecturer in New Testament studies at Oxford University and dean of Lichfield Cathedral in Staffordshire, is canon of Westminster Abbey. His numerous publications on Christian theology and church history include Who Was Jesus? (Eerdmans, 1992). His latest work, Jesus and the Victory of God, is the second volume of his Christian Origins and the Question of God (Fortress Press, 1996).
