The City of David
Revisiting Early Excavations

Edited by Hershel Shanks, archaeological commentary by Ronny Reich.

Three classic 20th-century works on the archaeology of ancient Jerusalem [La Cite de David (The City of David) by Raymond Weill, 1920, Jerusalem Antique (Ancient Jerusalem), by L.H. Vincent, 1912, and Jerusalem de l'Ancien Testament (Jerusalem of the Old Testament) by L.-H Vincent and illustrated by A. Steve, 1954) are here presented for the first time in English. Among the subjects covered are Jerusalem's ancient water system and whether a group of tombs south of the Temple Mount served as the royal cemetery for the Kings of Judah (including King David).

Ronny Reich, the leading excavator of Jerusalem today, guides us through these works and supplements them with his own essays and notes based on his extensive knowledge of the city.

Ronny Reich is today the most experienced excavator of Jerusalem. He began as an assistant to the great Nahman Avigad on the Jewish Quarter Excavations in the 1960s and 1970s. In recent years his discoveries have led to a complete reassessment of Jerusalem's history.
