Rohrbaugh draws on his experiences of living in both the Mediterranean world and in the West. He concentrates on passages in the New Testament that are influenced by the culture of the region and highlights the important role of honor and shame in those verses.

Richard Rohrbaugh is professor of religious studies at Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Oregon. Among his publications are Social Science Commentary on the Gospel of John (with Bruce Malina; Fortress, 1998), Using Social Science in New Testament Interpretations (Fortress, 1996) and Social Science Commentary on the Synoptic Gospels (Fortress, 1992).
