BAS's Acclaimed Video Lectures: Series One:
The Dynamics of Intolerance: Jews and Gentiles in Hellenistic Egypt
John Collins
Collins explores the ancient origins of anti-Semitism. Using two examples from pre-Christian Jewish communities in Egypt--the Elephantine and the Alexandrian communities--Collins uncovers some roots of anti-Semitism having to do with nationalism and cultural concepts of hospitality, along with other causes related more directly to Jewish religious practices.

John Collins is professor of Hebrew Bible at the University of Chicago Divinity School. He has served as president of the Catholic Biblical Association and editor of the Journal of Biblical Literature. His most recent books include Apoclypticism in the Dead Sea Scrolls (Routledge, 1997), Jewish Wisdom in the Hellenistic Age (Westminster Press, 1997), and The Encyclopedia of Apocalypticism, vol. 1 (Continuum, 1998). His article "A Pre-Christian 'Son of God' Among the Dead Sea Scrolls" appeared in the June 1993 issue of Bible Review.
