Women and Work Teaching Packet
Women and Work Teaching Packet
This teaching packet features the off our backs special issue on work. In this issue of off our backs (vol. 34, no. 1/2), contributors share their struggles and triumphs within the work force (at home and otherwise). New Women’s Studies students may have a difficult time understanding the repercussions, especially for single mothers, of the infamous “second shift” that plagues many women. Connecting this theory-in-practice to the cycle of economic oppression unique to single mothers is an important revelation in any student’s understanding of the capitalism-driven patriarchal hierarchy that dominates western society. This issue of oob gives women in a number of working environments a forum to share their experiences and is a great illustration of what women’s work really looks like.

Women and Disability Teaching Packet
Women and Disability Teaching Packet
This teaching packet features the off our backs special series on disability, spanning the 2002 Nov-Dec issue and the 2003 Jan-Feb issue. These issues illustrate that the cross section of oppressions that is created when a woman is black or a lesbian is much more mediated than the cross section of oppressions created when a woman is also disabled. In this two-part series of off our backs, our contributors share personal narratives and commentaries on what their lives as women with disabilities are like. Students will gain an inside perspective of this sometimes overlooked patriarchal stronghold.

Women and Education Teaching Packet
Women and Education Teaching Packet
This two-part series is a compilation of a number of commentaries, reports and visions of women participating in and being excluded from education. Illiteracy, prison education reform, pro- and anti-single-sex educational institution commentary and Women’s Studies experiences and praises are included. This topic is covered in a wide spectrum of commentary that allows students to explore the multiple ways women experience education. New Women’s Studies students will benefit from the commentary particular to Women’s Studies departments by being prompted by a number of off our backs contributors to question Women’s Studies opponents and find their own truths about education and feminism.

Women and Love Teaching Packet
Women and Love Teaching Packet
Deconstructing heterosexual norms in the context of love relationships sometimes poses a problem for new Women’s Studies students. Prompting students to explore relationships outside of the mainstream mediated imagery of what a relationship should look like (a man and a woman—and the appropriate gender normative behavior) can be difficult. The off our backs issue Love: What’s Feminism Got to Do With It? (vol.34, no. 5/6) could be used as a tool in the classroom to assist in student’s exploration of relationships outside of what is constructed as “normal.”

Women and Global Perspectives Teaching Packet
Women and Global Perspectives Teaching Packet
The International special issue of off our backs showcases feminist perspectives from around the world. All too often mainstream media ignore or are unaware of newsworthy events that relate to or affect women worldwide. This issue of off our backs exemplifies the critical importance of alternative press sources. Encouraging new Women’s Studies students to seek out alternative resources for news may be difficult at first—often they still take to heart every byline put out by Fox News. Utilizing this issue of off our backs in the classroom will create global awareness of news concerning women worldwide.

Women and Abortion Rights Teaching Packet
Women and Abortion Rights Teaching Packet
Abortion/reproductive rights has always been a difficult subject to cover in the classroom. This topic has been such a defining aspect of the women’s movement that we have compiled an off our backs exclusive of news and commentary chronicling the past thirty years of news and women’s commentary on abortion rights. What were women thinking and feeling pre-Roe v Wade? Were abortions being performed pre-Roe? What did the Supreme Court decision really mean for the lives of women? Have there been deviations from the decision? New Women’s Studies students may wonder about all of these questions but may be too intimidated by classmates or the subject itself to ask in class. This series of historical perspectives and news will be useful to Women’s Studies students who want a broader base for understanding abortion rights.
